The Minister of Defence, Gen. Christopher Musa (retd.), has called for every Nigerian to undergo military training to gain a better understanding of the demands and sacrifices involved in protecting the country.
Musa made the proposal during an appearance on the African Leadership Podcast with Ken Giami, released on Monday.
He said military training would expose Nigerians to the physical and psychological demands of military service, including hunger, exhaustion, long hours without sleep and prolonged physical exertion.
> “Every Nigerian should be able to go through military training. It will give you a different perspective about life,” Musa said.
He said such experience would also help Nigerians better appreciate the sacrifices made by members of the armed forces who risk their lives to protect the country.
Musa who hints on Nationwide compulsory military training starting 2027, urged Nigerians to remember that soldiers are also members of families who leave their loved ones behind while serving in difficult conditions.
“Everybody wants peace, and that is important, so we want them to understand soldiers are fathers, brothers and sisters of people. They’ve families they’ve left behind, staying in the weather, rain, dust, night or day, staying there to ensure the country is secured,” he said.
The minister also attributed increased border infiltration to the withdrawal of Niger, Burkina Faso and Mali from regional security arrangements, saying Nigeria was strengthening bilateral relations with countries including Cameroon to improve security along its borders.
