The Comptroller General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, has officially emerged as the new President of the Nigeria Amateur Wrestling Federation (NAWF), following a unanimous vote during the federation’s executive election.
The election, held at the Gymnasium Hall, Package B of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja, saw all 14 executive board members endorse Adeniyi as the sole candidate, resulting in a smooth and uncontested victory.
Adeniyi’s election is considered a strategic step toward strengthening the structure, visibility, and competitive capacity of wrestling across Nigeria. Known for his administrative discipline and reform-driven leadership in public service, stakeholders believe his entry into the sport’s governance will stimulate growth at both grassroots and professional levels.
In the same election, Chris Amkpila, representing the North Central zone, retained his position as Vice President, signaling continuity and confidence in the federation’s executive lineup.
Adeniyi Outlines Vision for Wrestling Development
In his acceptance remarks, Adeniyi expressed appreciation for the board’s trust and reaffirmed his commitment to advancing the sport’s national and international appeal.
> “This election reflects unity, transparency, and a shared vision for progress. Wrestling is more than a sport; it is a cultural heritage. My administration will focus on broadening grassroots participation, enhancing athlete development, and securing stronger partnerships to support our programs.”
He also emphasized the role of sports in promoting peace, national cohesion, and healthy youth engagement.
Under the new leadership, the Nigeria Wrestling Federation is expected to:
• Expand grassroots wrestling academies
• Strengthen athlete support and training programs
• Improve tournament organization and sponsorship access
• Promote Nigeria’s wrestling presence in continental and global competitions
