African professional wrestling gained fresh international visibility as the International Gala Championship took place in Kinshasa from September 11 to 13, 2026, attracting wrestlers, promoters, officials and other stakeholders from across the continent.
The three-day championship combined competitive wrestling with opportunities for participants to build professional relationships, exchange ideas and explore avenues for greater cooperation within Africa's wrestling industry.
Secretary General of Pro Wrestling Africa (PWA), Olusesan Olukoya, described the Kinshasa gathering as an important moment for the development of professional wrestling on the continent.
According to Olukoya, the championship demonstrated the depth of talent available in Africa while providing a platform for wrestlers and industry stakeholders to connect beyond their respective national boundaries.
«“The International Gala Championship in Kinshasa was more than a wrestling event. It was a meeting point for African wrestling, where talents, ideas, cultures and professional experiences came together,” Olukoya said.»
He said the increasing involvement of African wrestlers and wrestling administrators in international competitions could contribute to greater visibility for the sport and create new opportunities for athletes.
Olukoya identified professional training, stronger organisational structures, regular international competitions and sustainable partnerships as important areas requiring continued attention.
“Africa has wrestlers with tremendous potential. What is needed is stronger structure, more international exposure, professional training opportunities and sustainable partnerships,” he said.
Platform for continental cooperation
Beyond the competition itself, the Kinshasa event provided an opportunity for wrestling stakeholders to discuss the future of the sport and establish professional connections.
Olukoya emphasised the importance of cooperation among promoters, wrestlers, federations, administrators and other industry participants, noting that stronger collaboration could help create a more connected African wrestling ecosystem.
International championships, he said, can also serve as platforms for identifying emerging talent and providing established wrestlers with opportunities to compete before wider audiences.
The gathering further highlighted the cultural dimension of professional wrestling, with participants from different backgrounds interacting through a sport that continues to develop across the continent.
PWA's continental vision
For Pro Wrestling Africa, the Kinshasa championship aligns with its broader objective of promoting professional wrestling across Africa and strengthening relationships between African wrestling organisations and international partners.
Olukoya said the organisation would continue to support initiatives capable of expanding opportunities for African wrestlers and increasing their participation in international competitions.
“The future of African professional wrestling is in collaboration. Kinshasa has once again reminded us that when African wrestling stakeholders come together, we can create something that attracts the attention of the world,” he stated.
The September 11–13 International Gala Championship therefore adds to the growing calendar of international wrestling activities taking place across Africa, providing opportunities for athletes, promoters and administrators to develop new professional connections.
The Kinshasa gathering also reinforced a broader message from the continent's wrestling community: with increased competition, exposure, training and cooperation, African professional wrestling can continue expanding its presence on the international stage.
